Dr. Jesus Vidaurri of Monterrey, Mexico has designed the Vidaurri Fluid Retention Ring to aid surgeons in controlling solutions on the cornea during corneal cross-linking (CXL) and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) procedures. It features a stainless steel, double-walled vacuum ring, centering barrel with cross-hairs and a spring action syringe. To begin, a surgeon centers the vacuum ring on the patient's cornea using the centering barrel; then gently aspirates the vacuum ring onto the cornea using the spring activated syringe. Once vacuum is achieved, the surgeon simply introduces the solution into the inner ring thereby securely containing it within the central 8.7mm of the cornea. Before releasing aspiration, a surgical sponge can be used to remove the solution.
Benefits of using the Vidaurri Fluid Retention Ring:
reduces the amount of solution used in every case
applies and treats the cornea alone without affecting other tissue
requires less technician time
eliminates CXL effects on limbal and conjunctival cells
